COLLECTING/STORING whether it's the entire vintage fashion line from 1959 to the early 1970's, or, if you collect only Skipper, Ken or Francie doll fashions, or possibly a series, like mod; be sure you know how to protect your garments from over exposure to heat/light/dust/odors/mildew. Try not to handle the items too often if you want them to remain new like (especially if you plan on resale). Some collectors look only for mint or not played with items. The elements can fade or age the garments very easily, especially the fragile fabrics.  Be cautious with your early Barbie dolls when it comes to the metal post earrings (pearls or hoops). The tarnish on the metal posts can oxide on the doll's vinyl and cause damage; that terrible green stain, most of us have seen on some of the vintage dolls. Many collectors remove the earrings even an Nrfb (if the items aren't packaged under cello). If the doll or molded head etc. was packaged under cello/plastic, you must make the decision to open the package, to remove any earring. Check your Nrfb dolls regularly for stains on the doll's ears.

Storing materials- You can wrap some fashions/items in acid free papers or materials. Some items can be well protected in cello wrap that you can purchase at many party stores or school supply centers. If your dolls are on display in curios, shelves etc., be sure you adjust the lighting so the items will not come in contact with too much over exposure or heat. The mod era Barbie dolls are commonly known to fade or pale. Any safe guards we can take to possibly slow down this process would be a plus. Sometimes, even with proper storing, the dolls still may fade. I think too, it has a lot to do with the earlier care the doll/item received before many completed and current purchases are made. I have several Casey dolls that have fade spots on their faces and blue spots on the legs and these spots appeared recently; a few years ago, these same dolls were a very peachy color with no body stains. Just be cautious with your vintage storing; enjoy them, yes, but be sure you follow some basic individual steps to store your items properly. Exchanging doll care tips and ideas with friends can be an advantage as well.

inventory
Try to make a personal inventory list of all of your Barbie dolls and family friends'/fashions/accessories/play sets/books/miscellaneous items/more that you have in your collection (or any collection). There are just too many dolls and fashions to recall with an extensive collection what any collector may have and memories do fade over a long period of time.
